HER 108TH. BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
……………………..
OLIVE’S 40TH POST
Olive
Good evening everyone. I had my birthday party today. Oh, it was lovely!
(Ollie’s actual birthday is the 20th. But the Home, where she lives, wanted it midweek, not on the weekend.)
The lovely little children came, sang me songs, and then helped me unwrap my presents.
Mike’s just added them singing at the end of this
Mike
We’ll put up the songs as soon as we can, Ollie. I just wanted to rush up a few photos of the eight year olds, one hundred years younger than you, my dear!
Olive
That’s alright. Here’s the children all crowding round, helping me open my presents.
………………………

…………………………….

……………………………….
Mike
And the old soldiers were there too. The ones who served with your husband, Bing, in WW11.
Bing your second husband, wasn’t he? The good one.
Olive
Too right! It was splendid that they came!
………………………….

…………………………….
Mike
This clip is you on ABC TV. last night, Ollie. 108 years compressed into 108 seconds, or there abouts.
No mention that the kids who sang were 8, which is a shame after all the trouble I went to.
(I’ve filmed the item off the TV news, very bad quality, folks.. The URL is below, but it’s not clickable for some reason.
If you want to see the item better quality, paste this URL address, and it should take you to the ABC site for a better copy)
………………………
http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2007/10/17/2062390.htm
…………………………
………………………….
Mike
I’ve just finished the editing the songs that the kids from Central Coast Grammar practiced for Ollie. Their singing’s a lot better than my editing, I’ll tell you!
…………………………

Mike
In the post below, folks, is all the news about our Canadian search, so keep reading if you are in Canada or just curious!

Dear Olive,
I have just watched the celebrations of your birthday here in Vietnam on Star World. You are famous in Vietnam also. I am on an Australian Youth Ambassador Assignment here in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and as a fellow Australian I wanted to personally wish you a nice happy birthday.
All the best to you and your family.
Joanne Isbister
Joanne, that’s amazing you saw Ollie in Vietnam? What a strange world.
Can you perhaps comment with some very old person in Vietnam and bring this to the blog? The very old in Vietnam have amazing faces, full of the lines of time. Some photos would be great.
Somewhere I have a special black and while photo of an old woman taken at th time of the Vietnam war. I was there as a journalist. The photo is very moving. If I can find it, I’ll put it on the blog.Mike the helper

Beautiful ! What a lovely day. I’ve been waiting and watching to hear about it - I know those 8 year olds will never forget meeting you and singing for you. Is Eric doing an article for the local paper Mike?
What an array of medals that old soldier had!
If you can sometime, could you please tell about the time when your husband Bing was in the war, and how you managed while he was away?
Dear Gracious Olive, I’m sure God has kept you this side Heaven for a special purpose - blessed are those who get to meet you; including those of us, like me, who can only know you this way.
(Thankyou again Mike for making that possible)
Blessings for Saturday, and all the days ahead.

Hullo, Ms. Riley, and happy birthday from America! I just saw a lovely report on your celebration and thought I’d track you down to wish you well. My husband just turned thirty four days ago, and he was feeling quite sorry for himself. Olive, I’ve been enjoying reading your stories, seeing your pictures, beginning soon after your first blog, or “blob” post, as you say. Thanks to your helper, Mike, for assisting you with creating such an interesting blog.
Your blog and DVD has been an additional inspiration for at least one Los Angeles area, California, USA, retirement community skilled nursing facility. Some individuals are temporarily there for rehabilitation and may leave for a higher level of care such as Assisted Living, or to Independent Living in the retirement community. Some return to their own homes. Others remain as permanent residents. All the individuals are usually Elders - age 50 years to 100, or older. One particular facility is preparing to explore providing a blogging opportunity for residents. Many will need a helper as you have.
There have been many smiles on the faces of residents who have seen your DVD movie. The movie will continue to be shared with other local groups.
I’ll look forward to future accounts of your experiences, observations on life.
I wish you many more birthdays and “blobs.”
I have a special birthday greeting for you at my blog, “Along The Way”:

Ollie, this one is from Jess who’s blog says, Mission to be a millionaire. But her actual blog claims this not her true quest, and is very amusing. You and I both agree that money is not exactly the root of all evil, but it sure causes a lot of problems in the world because the richer you get, generally the more self impotant, arrogant and all round uncaring, you get as well. Olive Riley is a wonderful gal
At the age of one hundred and eight
She tells the world her interesting tales
And the world just thinks she’s great
She keeps a blog with the help of Mike
She even makes videos
She sings her songs so beautifully
Australias darling rose
A horse who drank beer, a schoolyard fight
Whatever the story may be
She’ll make you smile, she’ll make you laugh
Dear Olive, how we love thee~
Lovely poem, Tina, Olive will love it when Eric reads it to her. if we don’t lose it. We lost 100 messages yesterday. They just disappeared.
By the way, folks how about more poems based on Ollie’s adventures and your reaction to her, or even anything you want to rhyme you think she’d like ? We could make it a main blog story.
Anyway, heres’ a poem back for you.
Thank you thoughtful Tina
for your clever little rhyme.
I know you really mean her
to have a great old time
And indeed she was contented
with little kids around
singing like they meant it
from the beauty of the sound
Pack up your troubles, dear
and happy days are here again
these are thoughts which surely cheer
in a world that often seems insane

Sharalee, tell your TVNZ they should broadcast Olive’s film. All About Olive. There’s no excuse since Kiwis have no trouble with her accent. You can find a clip from the movie to interest them by going to youtube and typing in Olive Riley. Or they can write to Ronin Films listed on the blog at the side.

A very Happy 108th Birthday, Olive! I send you 108 special wishes, as you are indeed a very special lady. I want to tell you that I will never ever forget your Birthday, because today is also my Wedding Day! It is the second time around for me (I’m 60) and my sweetie (who is 76) and ours is a very unique relationship. That is because we are related through marriage; my first husband was his wife’s nephew. We’ve known one another since the early 70’s, when I came to know him as Uncle Fred. It wasn’t until after my husband died in Jan. 1997 and his wife died in Oct. 2000 that our relationship changed. I flew down to attend the funeral and to stay a few weeks with his family to help out in any way. By the time I returned home to Pennsylvania, my life had changed forever, and he wanted me to be with him. Less than a year later I moved lock, stock and barrel to NC, and have never regretted it for a moment, even though it meant moving from all the family and friends I had for over 50 years. Uncle Fred became Paul (which he preferred to Fred, his middle name), a man I had always admired in the past but came to love in a very different way. For certain financial reasons we waited until now to marry, and October 20th was the same date that we committed to one another in 2000, and it was our good fortune that the date fell on a Saturday this year. It’s something of a fairy tale story, but for us it is very real!
I absolutely love your blog, and thanks to a link to Eric Shackle’s e-book website, I’ve been a loyal reader almost from the start. Mike, you are to be highly commended for all your efforts, and for bringing to this often troubled world a reason for us all to keep living and to make the best out of what life has to offer. I know I speak for all in the enjoyment of reading each and every posting. It reminds me of the sweet and feisty grandmother I had who lived to be 101 1/2 years old. I still miss hearing some of her stories.
Take care and keep well, Olive. I wish you many more birthdays, just as I wish for many wedding anniverseries in the future for myself. Cheers!
Laurel, we do feel priveledged that you shared your story with us and the connection of dates. it must have been quite strange to begin to look at Uncle Fred differently . Do you joke about that sometimes, I wonder? Eric will be glad that you are an E book reader. Mike the helper.

Hi Granny Annie, thanks for the nice message. Please, go listen to the songs we’ve just posted and see they grab you.
What’s a chicken rancher, pray
There’ nothing in the books
are you on a horse all day
wranglin wayward chooks
Granny Annie, spill the beans
we really want to know
Do you work in little teams
Or are you singly on the go?
Sorry my rhymes are so bad, Granny Anny, but do tell us more about chicken ranching

Mike - You are right that it was a bit strange for me to look at someone I had called Uncle Fred for over 25 years and find myself drawn to him in a more intimate way. But after spending several weeks in his company and endless hours of talking and comparing notes of his wife and my husband, and the “relative” similarities between them, we found ourselves drawn to one another for many reasons. He stirred up feelings and emotions in me that I had really never felt before, and I seemed powerless to ignore them. It also inspired me to write a poem to him in the middle of the night, one of the best poetic pieces I’ve ever done, and in less than an hour’s time. All I knew is that after our connection became very apparent I could no longer call him Uncle Fred!
Now we are Mr. and Mrs. and our wonderful wedding day has just drawn to a close. We were blessed with the most spectacular breezy, sunny fall day, and a room full of our family and good friends, who made us feel like the most special people on earth. It’s a day I can never forget. And now we will embark on our honeymoon trip to the South Carolina beach. Life doesn’t get much better than what I have experienced today. And when I return in a week, I will eagerly seek out Ollie’s blog and fully catch up on the 41st posting that I’m short on time to read now. Thanks for responding to my earlier comment - it made my day even more special. Double blessings!
Laurel, I had not realized it was your actual wedding day. No wonder you were so full of happiness and news. Hve a great honeymoon. Mike the helper.
