OLIVE’S FIFTY THIRD POST

Mike

I think these should be enough stamps to carry our post to wherever you are.

If not, be so kind as to pay the postman the difference

By now, you know that we made it to the Powerhouse Discovery Centre.

In this post, for those of you who can play our video clips and enjoy seeing Ollie in action, we’ve got movies here of various things she saw at the centre.

Most are very modest objects that might have been around her little house in Broken Hill when she was a young mother in the 1920s.

I mean, what can be more modest than a clothes peg?

Each of the objects, the peg, the kitchen scales, the little stove, and the Kewpie doll, spark a memory and a story.

The small toy stove that Kimberly brought over, promised to cover ground we’d already explored, yet new things emerged from Ollie’s story.

This pair of scales surprised me too

As for the stereo viewer, I knew Ollie had never owned one of those.

Here’s evidence that Ollie indeed guesses as much as she sees, contrary to my previous hopeful remarks

As we left, we went out through the great hall where there were all sorts of old vehicles.

As we approached the steam tram, I was certain we’d get her story of how she almost had baby Barnie on such a tram in Nov. 1920.

Instead, out came a tale about how she’d helped an aborginal woman, a fellow passenger, one cold day near Adelaide .

The mother and her baby were shivering on the outside platform, too scared to come in with the white folks.

That is till our Ollie took charge!

Katya has a lovely Russian Xmas drawing to send to you. Here it is!

We all, Ollie, Eric, Katya and myself, send the happiest of Xmas’s to all Ollie’s readers.

Some of you have sent Ollie cards. I’m taking them to her this arvo if I can bear to go out into the heat.

Boy, what a sweltering day it is here on the Central Coast , as we run up to Xmas.

By the way, don’t forget that red donating button higher up the page.

You can help us in US dollars, Pounds, Euros, or Aust dollars . The machine sorts it all out.

Hi Olive! I’ve been meaning to leave a comment on your blog for quite some time. You see, about 7 months ago, my husband and I were ‘google-ing’ names to help decide on a name for our baby! We had three possible girl names, one of which was Olive Riley. When we stumbled upon news of your blog, we felt Olive was valiant contender. A girl she was, and Olive Louise Riley is her name. (Olive was my grandmother’s middle name). As you are thought to be the worlds oldest blogger, Olive has a blog of her own. We do have a password to her site, but if you’d like to look at it, we’ll share with you! Send me an email if you are interested. Merry Christmas from Snowy Minnesota!

Jennie, that suggests your daughter, your Olive Riley, may be the world’s youngest blogger. Like Olive senior she certainy need assistance to blog. I’ll write to you privately because of course I want to have a look. Mike the Helper

Mike, thanks so much for sharing Ollie’s visit to the Powerhouse. I particularly loved the story about the young Aboriginal girl with the baby on the train. You get the impression that Ollie would have been a force to reckon with in her early days, and she certainly shows in that clip that she’s still got a zest for life, she was so animated when she was retelling that story. Do you think that is her secret? I do, and I hope she continues for a while yet, I’m sure she has many more stories to tell yet and that you’ll encourage her to share them as always. Thanks so much, and again, a very Merry Christmas to all of you.

Olive is fiercely for fairness as illustrated in the story about the aboriginal mother. I think you are right, her zest for life is one of her long life secrets. Mike the helper

    Hi Olive and Mike!

So sorry I dropped off the face of the earth, it’s been a rather busy time here, and I haven’t had a chance to get into the next town to get some pretty and interesting stamps to send. I went into our local post office, and the girl was not terribly helpful. She claimed that they didn’t have very many stamps, and certainly no nice or colourful ones!

I rather think she just wanted to close and go home! But I will try to get some soon and get something in the post. I do love the penguin ones you posted, my oldest daughter has a penguin collection, and I will have to have her drop in and check them out!

I am very happy to see that Olive made it out to visit the Powerhouse, my computer connection tonight is very slow, so I will have to watch the videos later when it comes back up to full speed.

Until then, stay cool and I will try to stay warm! Hugs from Tombstone!

Thanks for persevering with the stamps, Rosi. if you a find a stamp and coin shop nearby, you an often get old stamps at face value . Don’t ask me why, but I’ve bought them in the US. it’s quite fun to mail a letter using value locked up in stamps since the 1940s. Mike the helper

Olive is a font of information, isn’t she? And lucky for us that she is…it’s great learning about the past, because that’s what influences the future.

What a beautiful painting Katya has done. She is so talented…that’s the style of painting that really appeals to me.

Katya, will be tickled, Robyn. Mike

Mike For the 3rd time, I tried to make a donation, and this time it went through! Tell people to keep trying. I guess there were some bugs in the system. I think they have been corrected now. This latest blog was the best ever. Thanks. Marylu

I’m so glad you persevered, Marylu, the donations are very helpful. Also, I’m glad you the latest blog. We’re never sure when it’s so many movie clips like that. Mike the helper

    Hello again Olive and Mike!

Well, I finally managed to get into the larger town nearby, and they had some nice stamps. The lady there was more than helpful, and I think I got a nice assortment. We’ll see what you think!

Meanwhile, I hope your Christmas Day was lovely, and I wanted to say Katya’s Russian drawing is beautiful! I have always been interested in Russia from a young age, and I’ve lost count of how many Russian matryoshka (nesting dolls) I own!

I hope you are all doing well, please do your best to stay cool, and I hope the New Year brings Health, Happiness and Prosperity to all!

Hi Rosie, glad you are getting some nice stamps. Did I give you the address? I am going to put up some material about Katya going back to Russia to visit her parents. Mike the helpe

    Mike,

I’ve noticed that it’s been 17 days since a post was made, and checking back on dates of others, I see that this is the longest in time without. I keep checking my RSS feed and realized today how long it’s been since some news was posted. I sure hope all of you are feeling fine and are just on holiday. I’m sure others are wodering also.
